Colombia, a country renowned for its biodiversity, rich culture, and history, offers a vast variety of landscapes. It’s the perfect destination for travellers seeking a unique experience. From vibrant cities to breathtaking rural landscapes, Colombia is a place of constant discovery. In this article, we’ll explore four destinations that showcase the country’s diversity: Cali, Salento, Medellin, and Cartagena.
Cali: The Salsa Capital of the World
Our journey begins in Cali, the perfect destination for a trip with friends. Famous for its vibrant energy, warmth hospitality and passion for music and dance, this city is a haven for salsa lovers. Cali is home to some or the best salsa schools in the world, and every night its clubs and bars come alive with the rhythm of professional dancers.
One of the best places to experience Cali’s culture is Barrio San Antonio, a historic district with cobblestoned streets, colorful houses, and a wide range of restaurants and cafes. Additionally, the Cerro de las Tres Cruces and Cristo Rey offer spectacular views of the city and are popular spots for hiking enthusiasts.
Salento: The Gateway to the Cocora Valley
From Cali, an organized bus tour will take you to the charming town of Salento, located in the heart of the Coffee Triangle, one of Colombia’s most beautiful regions. Salento is the ideal starting point for exploring the Cocora Valley, home to the famous wax palms – Colombia’s national symbol and the tallest trees in the world.
The Cocora Valley is a paradise for those who love hiking and nature. There are several trials to explore, either on foot or horseback, each offering stunning views of the wax palms, which rise up to 60 meters above the ground. The valley’s biodiversity is also remarkable, with a wide variety of birds and native plants.
In Salento, the village’s relaxed atmosphere invites travellers to take a peaceful break. Its colorful streets are lined with craft shops and cafes that serve freshly roasted local coffee, making it the perfect spot to unwind. Be sure to visit Calle Real, the main street leading to the Mirador de Salento, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the valley and surrounding mountains.
Medellin: The City of Eternal Spring
Our next stop is Medellin, a city ideal for meeting people and enjoying the vibrant night life. Known for its innovation and progress, Medellin is also called the City of Eternal Spring due to its mild climate throughout the year, making it a great destination no matter the season.
One of the most iconic places in the city is Comuna 13, a neighbourhood that is now an example of urban renewal. Through street art, outdoor escalators, and community tours, Comuna 13 has revitalized its identity, attracting tourists from all over the world who are eager to learn about this transformation.
Another highlight is Parque Arvi, a vast nature reserve located in the mountains surrounding Medellin. To reach the park, visitors take the MetroCable, a cable car system that offers not only stunning views of the city but also serves as an innovative form of public transportation. Once at the park, visitants can enjoy hiking, mountain cycling, and kayaking.
Of course, no trip to Medellin would be complete without mentioning Fernando Botero, one of Colombia’s most renowned artists, and the famous square, Plaza Botero, located in the city centre.
Cartagena: History, Culture and Beaches
Our journey culminates in the magical city of Cartagena, located on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. Founded in 1533, Cartagena de Indias is a city brimming with history and charm, with its colorful cobblestone streets, flower-filled balconies and walls that surround the old town.
The Historic Centre of Cartagena, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the most picturesque spots in Colombia. A stroll through the Clock Tower, Plaza de los Coches and the Church of San Pedro Claver transports you back to the colonial era, when Cartagena was a major commercial port of the Spanish Empire.
Cartagena is also famous for its beaches. Just a short boat ride away are the Rosario Islands, an archipelago with crystal-clear waters and vibrant coral reefs, ideal for snorkelling.
